Future Leadership™

Future Leadership is aimed at cultivating the next wave of arts and cultural executives, and equipping them with the expertise they will need to excel in top management positions within the next five to seven years. The approaching retirement of long-standing executives across the entire nonprofit sector presents a momentous challenge for the cultural field as well. With smart investment today, together we can transform this looming change into a creative opportunity.

A unique approach

Future Leadership is a partnership between NAS and you – a chance for us to collectively develop exactly the professional development experiences needed for our next wave of top executives. We used online tools, such as the Future Leadership Program Design Blog, to "co-author" new services and events with you and your colleagues. NAS will maintain this "public square" throughout the life of the program, and we’ll contribute our resources and expertise to help design and deliver the highest quality professional development events and services. This is a novel community experiment but one we believe can pay great rewards.

Pilot events

During September and October 2009, NAS will be presenting full-day pilot events in six communities across the country. Each event will be led by faculty from a top business school, teaching content designed using input from both current and future executives through the Future Leadership survey and Program Design Blog. Online discussions will extend these events and provide ongoing support to the participants.

Fellowship

Each participant will receive a fellowship covering the full tuition of $500 for the leadership session. Acceptance into the program will connect you to a national network of Future Leadership Fellows, and will give you access to management expertise and advice from National Arts Strategies and the NAS network for a year.

National partners

NAS is collaborating with a national network of partners to present these professional development sessions across the country, including: Arts Alliance Illinois, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, The Boeing Company, Cultural Alliance of Southeast Michigan, Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance, The Henry Ford, New York Foundation for the Arts, Springboard for the Arts and Theatre Bay Area.
