David A. Owens, Ph.D.

Owen Graduate School of Management, Vanderbilt University

David A. Owens serves on the faculty at Vanderbilt University's Graduate School of Management in the area of organizational behavior. Specializing in strategic innovation in business, Professor Owens teaches graduate-level business courses in strategic management and innovation, product design and development, and organizational design. He also delivers executive education programs and consulting services to a wide range of clients in the U.S. and Europe. A dynamic teacher, Professor Owens receives top teaching ratings from participants in his executive and MBA programs. His work has been featured in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, London Guardian and San Jose Mercury News, as well as on NPR's Marketplace. His education and consulting clients include Kimberly Clark, LEGO, NASA, Bristol Myers Squibb, Corning World Kitchen, Alcatel, Daimler-Benz, the Tennessee Valley Authority, and Baptist Hospital, among others. While on leave from the university in 2007 and 2008, Professor Owens served as CEO of Griffin Technology Inc, a global producer of accessories for the MP3 / iPod market. Prior to becoming a professor, Professor Owens also worked as a product designer and design engineer at IDEO, a premiere global product-development firm. Professor Owens holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University in industrial engineering with an emphasis in organization studies; and an M.S. degree from Stanford in product design.
